ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The return of the Kurdistan Parliament to work is a cornerstone of political stability and strengthens the international community’s confidence in constitutional institutions, Sri Lanka’s honorary consul in the Kurdistan Region, Dr. Ahmed Jalal, said, stressing the vital role parliamentary diplomacy plays in building bridges of cooperation between Kurdistan and countries around the world.

Jalal spoke on Thursday while taking part in an expanded meeting held by the Kurdistan Parliament presidency with representatives of foreign diplomatic and consular missions in Erbil. The meeting was organized at the invitation of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Department of Foreign Relations.

Jalal told Kurdistan24 that the meeting served as a vital platform for direct communication with the Region’s official bodies. Participants reviewed current political developments and the mechanisms for reactivating parliamentary work following the election of the parliament’s presidency board.

They also discussed ways to resume the parliament’s legislative and oversight role and to follow government performance in a manner that reflects the will of voters.

The honorary consul said: “Reactivating constitutional institutions is not merely a political entitlement, but a foundation for creating an environment that encourages comprehensive economic and social development.”

He noted that joint meetings with the diplomatic corps give the international community a chance to follow the Region’s institutional transformation closely.

On bilateral relations, Jalal pointed to Sri Lanka’s effort to strengthen its partnership with the Kurdistan Region. He called for making use of shared potential and opportunities to develop cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, tourism, education, and cultural exchange.

He added: “The Kurdistan Region has a strategic geographic location and promising economic assets that make it a partner worthy of regional and international attention. Its continued openness to the world supports efforts toward prosperity and long-term stability.”

Separately, Falah Anwar, the Philippines’ honorary consul in the Kurdistan Region, expressed hope that the reactivation of the Kurdistan Parliament would mark the start of progress for the democratic process in the area.

Anwar noted that the step is very important so that everyone can work together to serve the Kurdistan Region.

Jalal concluded his statement by thanking the parliament presidency and the Department of Foreign Relations for organizing the dialogue. He said he looks forward to continuing diplomatic work and strengthening the bonds of friendship and historic partnership that serve the shared interests of the two peoples.
