Turkish consul general voices hope for Kurdistan Region government formation, stronger ties
Erman Topçu describes Türkiye-Kurdistan Region relations as very good and progressing across all fields, urging political parties to reach an agreement and maintain regional stability and development.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Türkiye’s Consul General in Erbil, Erman Topçu, has expressed hope that political parties in the Kurdistan Region will reach an agreement to form a new regional government, reaffirming Ankara’s positive assessment of relations with the Kurdistan Region and its aspirations for continued security and development.
Topçu made the remarks during a meeting with Fadhil Mirani, head of the Administrative Board of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Politburo, at the party’s headquarters in Pirmam on Saturday, according to a statement published on the KDP’s official website.
During the meeting, Topçu thanked Mirani for arranging the visit and emphasized that relations between the Republic of Türkiye and the Kurdistan Region were at a "very good level" and continuing to advance across all fields.
He also expressed hope that all political parties in the Kurdistan Region would reach an agreement and form a new government, stressing his wish for the Region's current stability and progress to continue.
Mirani, for his part, welcomed the Turkish diplomatic delegation and discussed the latest political developments in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region.
He described the recent steps toward activating the Kurdistan Region Parliament as a positive beginning toward overcoming the political deadlock that has persisted over the past two years.
Mirani also called on all political parties to set aside their differences and participate in forming the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), emphasizing the importance of restoring political and institutional momentum.
He further described relations between Türkiye and the Kurdistan Region as being at a very good level and continuing to develop.
The meeting comes as the Kurdistan Region moves toward reviving its parliamentary institutions following a prolonged political impasse.
The formation of a new cabinet remains a key priority after the October 2024 parliamentary elections, with political agreement among the main parties considered essential to advancing governance, institutional stability, and development.
The meeting comes three days after the Kurdistan Region Parliament resumed its activities on Nov. 4, ending nearly two years of legislative deadlock. During the session, attended by 52 lawmakers, parliament elected Vala Farid of the KDP as Speaker, Rami Nouri as Deputy Speaker, and Mona Qahwachi as Parliament Secretary.
The election of the parliamentary presidency marked an important institutional step toward restoring the legislature's legislative and oversight functions and advancing efforts to form the Kurdistan Region's tenth cabinet.
Relations between Türkiye and the Kurdistan Region extend across economic, trade, energy, security, and political sectors, with Türkiye remaining one of the Region's major economic partners.
Turkish companies have played a significant role in the Kurdistan Region's reconstruction and development, while bilateral cooperation has included energy infrastructure, cross-border trade, investment, and regional security coordination.
In recent high-level meetings, officials from both sides have reiterated their commitment to expanding cooperation and strengthening ties, reflecting the strategic and economic importance of the relationship to both Ankara and Erbil.
